Crypto Wallets Explained

How to store, protect, and control your cryptocurrency — the most critical skill in crypto.

What Is a Crypto Wallet?

A crypto wallet does not hold your coins — your crypto lives on the blockchain. A wallet holds your private key: a secret code proving you own those coins and allowing you to authorize transactions. Lose your key = lose your crypto permanently. Share your key = someone steals everything instantly.

Hot Wallets vs Cold Wallets

Hot wallets are software apps connected to the internet — MetaMask, Phantom, Trust Wallet. Convenient for daily use but more vulnerable to hacking. Cold wallets are physical hardware devices stored offline — Ledger or Trezor. Your key never touches the internet. For any amount over $500, a hardware wallet is strongly recommended.

What Is a Seed Phrase?

When you create a wallet, you receive a 12 or 24-word seed phrase. This IS your wallet. Anyone with these words controls all your funds across all blockchains. Write it on paper. Store copies in multiple secure physical locations. Never photograph it. Never type it into any website. Never share it with anyone — ever.

Exchange Wallets — Convenient but Risky

When you buy on Coinbase or Binance, they hold your crypto on your behalf. This means you don't control the private keys. 'Not your keys, not your coins' exists because exchange hacks and bankruptcies have cost investors billions. For long-term holdings, move to your own wallet.

How to Send Crypto Safely

Always double-check wallet addresses before sending — transactions are irreversible. Send a small test amount first. Never copy-paste addresses from emails or messages. Scammers swap addresses in your clipboard. Verify the first and last 6 characters of every address.

Common Wallet Scams

The most common scam: fake support contacts you asking for your seed phrase to 'fix' your wallet. No legitimate company ever asks for your seed phrase. Ever. Hang up, block, and report immediately. If you feel pressured or uncertain, stop and verify through official channels only.
